Test Movie Review: Cricket in India is not just a sport – it’s an obsession. Several films have explored the subject, including real-life stories of cricketers. Debut director Sashikanth is entering the field with Test, a film that brings together three characters: Indian cricketer Arjun (played by Siddharth), a kind-hearted school teacher Kumudha (Nayanthara) and her husband, scientist Saravanan (R. Madhavan).

What is Test about?
The film revolves around Arjun, a once successful cricketer who is going through a tough phase in his career. Amidst rumours of being dropped from the Indian team, Arjun is desperate to prove himself one last time. He is pinning all his hopes on the upcoming high-stakes India vs Pakistan match in Chennai – a match that could make or break his career.
Meanwhile, Kumudha and her husband Saravanan are dealing with problems of their own. Kumudha dreams of becoming a mother and is preparing for IVF treatment. But suddenly, Saravanan, who is working on an innovative water-energy project, tells her that he urgently needs ₹50 lakh due to licensing issues with her school canteen – to hide his financial troubles.
Meanwhile, the police begin investigating a possible match-fixing scandal surrounding the India-Pakistan game. As tensions mount, the lives of these three characters begin to intertwine in unexpected ways.
A story of conflicting dreams
The film delves deep into the personal struggles of each character. Kumudha wants a child more than anything else. Saravanan, on the other hand, is completely focused on getting his eco-friendly energy project approved by the government. Arjun is caught between his fading cricket career and the role of a father and husband.
These struggles form the emotional heart of the film. The screenplay, written by Sashikanth and Suman Kumar, explores difficult moral choices, personal sacrifices and how chasing dreams can complicate relationships.
Superb acting
The biggest strength of Test is its performances. Madhavan, Siddharth and Nayanthara play strong and believable characters. Nayanthara in particular stands out – her expressions and emotions as a woman torn between love, friendship and motherhood are heart-warming.
Madhavan and Siddharth also share impressive moments on screen and their characters seem layered and real. Meera Jasmine also leaves a mark as Arjun’s wife Padma.
Strong visuals, good music
Shaktisree Gopalan’s music complements the emotional tone of the film well and Viraj Singh’s cinematography beautifully captures the intensity of cricket and quiet private moments. Editor TS Suresh has done a good job, though the film’s runtime of 2 hours and 25 minutes feels a bit long – especially when the story slows down in the second half.
Hits and Misses
Test starts off strong with its characters and emotional depth, but the pace slows down when it goes into suspense mode around the match-fixing conspiracy. The final part seems a bit dragged, and here the film loses its grip.
Still, the film is worth a watch – especially for the honest performances of the lead actors and its thoughtful look at dreams and dilemmas.
Final Verdict:
Test is a well-acted emotional drama that blends cricket with personal struggles. It may not be a great film, but the brilliant performances of Madhavan, Siddharth and Nayanthara make it worth a watch.
Now streaming on Netflix.
