Actor Manoj Bharathiraja dies of heart attack
Tamil actor Manoj Bharathiraja, best known for his roles in films like Taj Mahal, Samudhiram and Alli Arjun, has died at the age of 48. The actor suffered a heart attack at his home in Chennai on Tuesday evening.
Fans and film industry in shock over sudden demise
Manoj’s manager confirmed the heartbreaking news to the media. The actor had recently undergone bypass surgery and was resting at his home in Chetpet when he suffered a fatal heart attack.
“Manoj was recovering after his bypass surgery but unfortunately passed away due to a sudden heart attack. This has left everyone in shock. His father, veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, is leaving for his home from Neelankarai. The funeral preparations are yet to be finalised,” his manager said. Manoj Bharathiraja is survived by his wife Aswathy (also known as Nandana) and their two daughters Arshitha and Mathivathani. He was last seen in the Tamil web series Snakes and Ladders, which released in 2024.

As soon as the news of his demise broke, fans and celebrities took to social media to express their grief. Actress Khushbu Sundar shared her condolences on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It is an absolute shock to hear that Manoj is no more with us. His untimely demise is heartbreaking. He was just 48. I pray for his father Bharathiraja sir and his family to give them strength during this painful time. Manoj, you will be missed. Rest in peace. Om Shanti.” Director Venkat Prabhu also expressed grief, tweeting, “Really sad to hear this news… Can’t believe you are no more, my brother #Manoj. Gone too soon. Deepest condolences to Bharathiraja Sir, his family and friends. May your soul rest in peace.”
Career and legacy of Manoj Bharathiraja
Manoj was the son of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja. He made his acting debut with his father’s film Taj Mahal. Over the years, he gave notable performances in films such as Alli Arjun, Samudhiram and Varshamellam Vasantham.
Apart from acting, Manoj also had experience working behind the camera. He worked as an assistant director to filmmaker Shankar in the hit film Enthiran. He also played supporting roles in films such as Champion, Eeswaran, Maanaadu and Virumaan.
His sudden demise is a great loss to the Tamil film industry, and he will always be remembered for his contribution to cinema. May his soul rest in peace.
